Try a wordle!

A "wordle" is a visual pattern of words arranged from something you have written.
See the definition of a "wordle" at http://www.macmillandictionaries.com/resourcenew.htm.
Check it out at www.wordle.net. Here's what I did:
title="Wordle: Readers, writers, thinkers">
alt="Wordle: Readers, writers, thinkers"
style="padding:4px;border:1px solid #ddd">
Here's what I wrote to make this wordle: In our classroom, we are readers, writers, and thinkers. By practicing these skills, we learn about the world. By using these skills expertly, we change the world. Readers, writers, and thinkers will change our world as we know it.
Here's a wordle of President Obama's inaugural speech:

A Post from Governor Perdue

This is our governor of North Carolina, Beverly Perdue. We contacted her on her website and here is her response:
What an honor it is to be invited to take part in this wonderful blog for Edwards' Eagles first grade class. I took some time to visit the blog today. It is easy to see how much fun Ms. Edwards' students are having and how much they are learning.
Whether deciding how to spend a few cents in your allowance, or billions of dollars in the North Carolina state budget, it all comes down to one thing: Choosing what matters most to you.
As governor, there is nothing more important than you, the students in Ms. Edwards' first grade, and all of the other students in North Carolina classrooms just like yours. I want to make sure all students learn all they can. I also want your teachers to have all the tools they need to be the very best at helping you learn. If teachers and students all do their part, I know there will be a bright future for all of us and for North Carolina.
That is why I like the job of governor so much. Every day I have the opportunity to help make the lives of people all over North Carolina a little better. As the first person in my family to go to college and the first woman to become North Carolina governor, I know there is no limit to where our dreams can take us if we do our best in school and work hard.
I wish all of you in Ms. Edwards' first grade a wonderful spring and great success as you continue your education.
Sincerely,
Bev Perdue

Mr. Bones, Dinosaur Hunter
Here's a picture of the whale bone!

Remember when we searched for fossils in sedimentary rock? Mr. Bones is an paleontologist who finds treasures buried in the earth (just like you did). As you read this story this week, think of a question you have for Mr. Bones. Write him a letter to ask your question. Remember the parts of a friendly letter? We know to use a greeting, body, and closing. Maybe Mr. Bones will write you back!

How did you spend your money?
This week you were PRODUCERS and CONSUMERS. In your group, you planned to sell a PRODUCT. You chose to sell a GOOD or a SERVICE. You were also given $16 dollars to spend. You saw posters, watched commercials, and decided what you were going to buy. How did you choose to spend your money? What did you buy? Why did you buy it?

Think about this.
How should you treat people who are different from you? Were people always treated this way?
